With the participation of Zendaya, Bad Bunny, JLo, and Chris Hemsworth as hosts of the event, Met Gala 2024 promises to bring many exciting moments for fashion enthusiasts.
For fashion lovers, there’s no more exciting time of the year than the annual Met Gala event. Gathering a host of the most famous names, the highest fashion, and those bathroom mirror selfies – Met Gala is considered the Super Bowl of the fashion world, and with good reason. And now, we officially know which of your favorite stars will host the Met Gala this year. As the first Monday of May – the day of the Met Gala event – draws near, let’s recap all the key information about Met Gala 2024.
On November 8, 2023, Vogue revealed that the theme of Met Gala 2024 would be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” However, despite this theme evoking images of Disney princesses, this year’s event dress code is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story of the same title, introduced in 1962.
“It’s almost like a hymn to nature […] Nature as a metaphor for fashion, as well as an allegory for its fragility and transience,” Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Costume Institute, shared with The New York Times.
Sponsored by TikTok, the Met Gala exhibition will focus on 50 outstanding, intricate, and delicate historical garments that can never be worn again – explaining the theme “Sleeping Beauties.” Other pieces displayed in the exhibition include about 250 clothing designs from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and designs from legends such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition will open on May 10th and run until September 2nd, 2024.
And who will be the co-chair – co-chair of the Met Gala this year alongside Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour? On February 15, Vogue revealed that Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth would be the co-chairs and hosts of Met Gala 2024. While Zendaya, JLo, and Bad Bunny are familiar names to the Met Gala, this will be the first time “the thunder god” Chris Hemsworth attends this event.
Alongside them, Loewe’s creative director and J.W. Anderson – Jonathan Anderson, and TikTok CEO – Shou Zi Chew, will also attend the Met Gala as co-chairs.
Last year’s Met Gala theme was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, the famous designer with iconic collections at Chanel. This was an occasion for many celebrities to choose Chanel-inspired outfits, but also for many to approach the theme quite literally.
Jeremy Pope wore a 10m-long cloak with a hand-drawn face of Karl Lagerfeld embroidered on the back. Doja Cat marked her first appearance at the Met Gala with a costume inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette. She wore a sparkling sequin dress from Oscar de la Renta, but what caught everyone’s attention the most were the cat nose and cat ears she used. Jared Leto also dressed up as Choupette, but as a life-size cat version.
With bold and unique clothing choices leaving a mark on every Met Gala season, we once again eagerly await to see what surprising “shocks” Met Gala this year will bring.
