Zach Edey, a dominant force in Big Ten basketball, will bid farewell to Purdue after the current season. Despite being eligible for an additional year due to COVID-19, the Purdue standout, boasting the second-highest scoring average (23.7 ppg) and third-best rebounding average (11.8 rpg) among all Division I players this season, has decided not to extend his college career into the 2024-25 season.
According to Boilermakers coach Matt Painter, this season marks Edey’s final appearance at the collegiate level.
Edey’s performance last season was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, earning him recognition as the national Player of the Year. This season, he has elevated his game further, contributing to Purdue’s impressive 25-3 record after a recent victory over Michigan. With Purdue positioned as a contender for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, Edey’s decision not to return for another season comes at a time of great success for the team.
Currently leading in Player Efficiency Rating, Box Plus/Minus, and Win Shares for the season, Edey is on pace to potentially secure back-to-back Player of the Year honors, a feat achieved only by Ralph Sampson and Bill Walton in college basketball history.
Despite last season’s disappointment, where Purdue suffered a shocking loss as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the team remains determined to reclaim its status as Big Ten champions and seek redemption in the upcoming March Madness. With favorable odds to contend for the national title, Purdue stands as one of the top contenders in the betting market, poised to make a strong postseason push once again.
