In the midst of the action, Perez’s teammate Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell engaged in a skirmish during the initial corners of the race. Russell managed to overtake Verstappen, but the Dutchman’s relentless pace allowed him to reclaim his podium position later in the race. The on-track clash was followed by a heated exchange between Verstappen and Russell off the track, raising questions about the intensity of their competition.

Verstappen expressed his confusion regarding the incident, stating, “No, it’s not clarified. I just don’t understand why you need to take so much risk on Lap 1.” Despite damage to his car from the contact, Verstappen successfully overtook Russell on the sixth lap and maintained his third-place position.

Russell, offering his perspective, remarked, “I don’t really know if it was a chat. I was quite surprised; I thought he was coming over to say ‘good battle,’ to be honest. I’m here to fight, I’m here to win. I’m not just going to wave him by because he’s Max Verstappen in a Red Bull. (There’s) nothing really more to say. I thought the move was on, and that’s about it, really.”

The drama continued on the second lap when Yuki Tsunoda clipped the wall, leading to debris on the track and the deployment of both a virtual and a full safety car. Once racing resumed on the sixth lap, Perez utilized his DRS advantage, effortlessly surpassing Leclerc and showcasing the Red Bull’s exceptional pace. Perez then extended his lead, securing the victory and eight valuable championship points.

The incident-packed sprint race sets the stage for heightened excitement and competition in the upcoming main race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
